In the Key of G returns to George Place with a bold new twist. Originally launched as a daring experiment, this genre-blurring event pairs local musicians with some of Australia’s most celebrated composers, who will perform works they’ve never seen or heard before with talented improvisers on the evening. Four Sydney composers from diverse musical backgrounds have written original pieces, which are learned and rehearsed by local performers ahead of the show. These players then take the stage alongside professional improvisers, resulting in a one-of-a-kind performance where preparation meets spontaneity. This year, the program expands beyond piano to welcome a broader range of instruments, inviting even more local talent to join the adventure. The result? An unpredictable, electric night of collaboration, courageous creativity, and new music coming to life in real time. In the Key of G celebrates the soundscape of our fabulous city, talent, and community, bringing together emerging and established musicians to reimagine what performance can be.
